Toothpastes can be tricky. They seem good for you. They keep your teeth clean, right? Plus, why would anyone feel the need to put gross stuff in a paste that is supposed to clean your teeth? Sadly, most major toothpaste brands contain harmful ingredients and added sugar. Good news for you: making your own toothpaste is super easy and requires only three basic ingredients. Making your own toothpaste means less waste, too! No plastic tubes to figure out what to do with. You can use one glass jar and reuse it for every toothpaste batch. Here's everything you'll need for the toothpaste and how to make it:

Empty container with a lid -- I used a glass spice jar that I had laying around my house.

2 tablespoons of baking soda

3 tablespoons of semi-solid coconut oil

20 - 25 drops of peppermint oil -- You can also use cinnamon, spearmint or any other flavor you prefer

Add your baking soda and coconut oil to the glass jar and stir well. You want the coconut oil to be thick and not melted. Add the peppermint oil, starting wtih 20 drops and adding more based on your preference.

Some notes: This is not going to taste like the toothpaste you are used to, because there is no added sugar. It may taste saltier to you, but it is so much less toxic. Give it a go. Also, if the weather is hot and your toothpaste is melting, you can store it in the fridge and before using, let is melt slightly. Alternatively, if the weather is super cold and your toothpaste is rock hard, you can run the jar under warm water to loosen. The toothpaste should look like a paste and be stirable.

To use, take a small spoon and put a dime sized blob on your toothbrush then brush normally. One batch lasts me at least a month.
